There are three typical methods used to fasten purlins to the top chord of trusses. The higher the snow load the closer the purlin spacing required. Engineers calculate this on a job site basis. For snow loads exceeding 60 trusses are recommended to be closer together. However, when you actually lay them out things change a little but on you due to the fact that the gable trusses are nailed to the exterior of the posts, while the commons are notched into the post for full bearing in between.
The way this works out you end up short a couple of inches depending on the post width you use at the end, scratching your head wondering what to do. The solution is simple enough. Can wood purlins break as in the end of the board, not break as in failure on center of a roof truss. Either if they are on edge or flat, so you can have a seamless row.
I see them usually overlapped. If you have to overlap how do you keep your metal fasteners in a straight line for the metal roof. Roof purlins are overlapped when placed on edge. They are butted together when laid flat The fasteners will not be in a straight line if overlapped. When nailing the first truss to outside poles,how do you make sure all other trusses will be the same height as the first? So the truss support extends past the post and the end truss sits on it just like all the other trusses. I am building a 48 ft pole barn with 1 ft overhangs on the gable ends. Truss spacing will be 2 ft oc with the snow load here in Maine. I am going to space the purlins 2 ft oc from ridge to soffit.

If you build a truss instead of the C channal, you should be able to make the span fairly easily. Think along the lines of two horizontal purlins reinforced with a bunch of triangles along the length. The triangle shape gives it all the strength. Anyway, I would have to agree with Eddie on this one, the span is much too large to span with a 4" C Purlin. For reference purposes, I recently designed a chemical storage building for a water treatment plant in East Texas and the span between the roof trusses was approximately 17 feet.
I used 8"x2. The only load on the roof was that of wind and 20 psf live load from "snow. So the Z-purlin used in my building is about "double" the size of your 4" C purlin and could only go around 17 feet in span.

What type of roof is going on top of the lean to? If it's metal, then spacing the 2x6's to four feet is plenty strong enough. Then put your 2x4 purlins on the flat every 2 feet and attach your metal to the purlins. What is the pitch of your lean to going to be? Do you have snow? You can easily go 12 feet with 2x6's on a metal roof with a pitch.
Evenbut then you start to push the limits of what it can shed during a heavy rain without leaking. If you are going with shingles, then that additional weight means you need to stay at 24 inch centers and you have to be or steeper.

Thats a heck of alot of weight. So do NOT go to 4' o. Also a row of blocking where your attaching to the existing roof truss would be nice. Have fun with your project. It all depends on how much margin you want.
